We are huge fans and advocates of America's National Parks and have explored nearly all of them over the past decade. We support these national treasures through volunteer work and an annual monetary donation. The National Park Foundation plays a vital role in generating private support and builds strategic partnerships to protect and enhance America’s national parks for present
and future generations.
This awesome organization is located in our hometown of Boone, North Carolina, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have supported their efforts with our time, in kind donations, and donations to their annual silent auction. Their mission is to provide transformative experiences through outdoor adventure and community service.
In 2016, we had the wonderful opportunity to live and volunteer for 4 months in Sirembe, Kenya. While involved in a wide range of community projects, we also started Sirembe's first public library, and spent every Saturday facilitating activities at a local orphanage funded and run by Restore Humanity. This organization does absolutely tremendous work for children and families, in Sirembe and beyond!
We love the experience of seeing and photographing wildlife when we are in wild places! The goal of the Wildlife Conservation Society is to protect and conserve the world's largest wild places in 14 priority regions, habitat for around 50% of the world’s biodiversity, and a wide range of charismatic megafauna. WCS does this through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature.
When we started out this midlife-venture in 2012, we spent many months volunteering on small, family-owned organic farms across the United States from Maine to Hawaii. We learned a ton, put in some hard work, and met some incredible people. WWOOF links visitors with organic farmers, promotes a cultural/educational exchange, and builds a global community conscious of ecological farming and sustainability practices.
While our simple lifestyle allows us to live very sustainably, we often fly to our RV show speaking gigs and other special events.
By calculating and offsetting our carbon footprint each year, we are able to live, work, and travel completely carbon neutral. Join us by investing in some incredible worldwide initiatives to reduce your carbon emissions through Terrapass!
The 350 organization was founded in 2009 by university friends along with author Bill McKibben who wrote one of the first books on global heating for the general public. It's name refers to 350 parts per million — the safe concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Today, their advocacy work focuses on supporting renewable energy solutions and cutting financial flows to fossil fuels and advocating for their reinvestment in cleaner and more just energy sources.
Hutch credits his beloved alma mater and its varsity swimming program with helping to shape his life and leadership. The Kenyon College Swimming Program continues to empower college athletes to win national championships and become leaders in various professions across the country and world. As a D-III athletic program, they do not provide athletic scholarships to any student; it's all for the love of the sport and community!
Vote with your dollars! Green America harnesses economic power through the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. We love to support their comprehensive sustainability focused initiatives by sponsoring them with a percentage of our own income!
We choose to live outside most days, enjoying Mother Nature's plethora of wonders. It's what we love and we work to conserve it for future generations to enjoy. But, we've seen our Earth change rapidly -- habitat is being destroyed, glaciers are melting, fires are burning out of control, sea levels are rising, and animals are endangered. Point Blue is a leader in climate-smart conservation, to help ensure that wildlife and our own communities continue to thrive in the decades to come.
When Hutch turned 50 in 2021, he wanted to do something epic and raise money for an important cause. He developed and marketed his "50 Mile Something" which involved kayaking, swimming, cycling and running...from sunrise to sunset. With the generous support from family and friends, he raised over $5000 for this great cause, which was especially salient as so many people had lost their jobs during the
COVID pandemic!
We spend a lot of time in the water, especially sea kayaking. We love to paddle in places where sea life is abundant. We've witnessed our oceans are changing rapidly due to rising temperatures, abundant trash, and ocean acidification. Oceana leverages law, science, grassroots activism, advocacy, and strategic communications to create policy change which helps improve ocean conditions around the world.
Since 2022, we've worked to create a partnership between Renogy Solar & Water Mission to bring solar powered water filtering to war torn regions and disaster areas around the world, as well as help developing communities establish more sustainable, safe drinking water practices. We are thrilled to support this effort with both in kind donations of Renogy components and monetary donations!
We work with many brands that are founded by women -- powerful, smart women with a focus on change and sustainability. We've seen first-hand the impact that women in developing countries can have when given appropriate support, funding, and advocacy. The Global Fund for Women fights for gender justice and seeks to transform power and privilege for a few into equity and equality for all.
